The Roger Chong Quartet - Funkalicious

The third studio album from Toronto-based jazz guitarist/composer and Toronto Independent Music Award Nominee, Roger Chong, Funkalicious is his most musically eclectic release to date. In compelling fashion, it showcases both the versatility of his songwriting and his ability to play fluent guitar within a wide range of styles. It is also a delightful offering that illustrates Roger’s musical and personal growth since his last studio release. The refreshing diversity of the material reflects the fact that the nine new original compositions were written in two separate stages. Armed with these new songs, Roger and his longtime rhythm section of bassist Ken McDonald, drummer Steve Farrugia, and new keyboardist Paul Mason, set up shop in Markham’s Awesome Production Studio. Funkalicious was recorded live off the floor in a single day, an approach that neatly captures the spontaneity and empathy of the quartet’s interaction. The quartet’s musical evolution is now vividly showcased on Funkalicious, the strongest offering yet in an already impressive discography from a major young talent.
